The Importance of Practicing with the Right Golf Ball

    Hey, Team Titleist!

I was working on my game a couple weeks ago at a great public resort course near me, Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, MA. The practice facilities are terrific at Pinehills - a huge range with lush turf and three green complexes in the short game area. My session was going well, but I fell into a lazy trap that I wanted to share.

After hitting a ton of bunker shots, using the range balls that Pinehills provides, I moved around to the opposite side of the green to work on some chips and pitches. Instead of grabbing a handful of shag balls from my own bag, I raked over a pile of range balls and started hitting shots to various pins. About twenty balls in, I started getting frustrated, as nearly every shot I hit was OFF. The balls (Titleist Range balls, by the way) were jumping off the face of my wedge and releasing way past the pin. I started to throttle back on how firmly I was hitting shots, but then it dawned on me - my short game feel is dialed in to one specific golf ball - and it's not a range ball. I've been playing Pro V1 exclusively for a couple years now and so, of course a different ball is going to behave differently.

I wised up and moved over to another green. I pulled out six gently-used Pro V1s from the shag pocket of my golf bag and started over. And almost immediately, the world started spinning on its correct axis again. My mis-step made me think of a great instructional tip that we recently received from Titleist staff member James Sieckmann, perhaps the most esteemed short game teacher in the game. So please don't take my word for it. Check out James' video above and see why it's so important not only to play one golf ball model exclusively, but also to practice with your one gamer ball.

Thanks!  And for more great short game instruction, check out James' library of videos in the Titleist Instruction Center: https://www.titleist.com/instruction-james-sieckmann

Thanks Rick. Great advice for those that may not have discovered the same thing. I always use my own ProV1x's for chipping and putting practice and do not mix ProV1x, ProV1, and AVX into the same practice sessions or daily play. I find that it messes me up, especially on lag putting where feel is key.

    Lethbridge,

Interesting. Using the mush range balls at our course chipping area are horrible. Guess I’m going to invest in a shag bag.

Great share! I purchased a couple dozen refurbished ProV1s just for practice. Old game balls that are necessarily up to the standard for play but can still be used for practice find their way to my shag bag. It’s nice to keep the consistency across the board.

Alex, just a tip, use or ignore. Next time you need to fill the shag bag, go with the "practice" balls and not "refurbished". Refurbished usually have an extra layer of paint added and some are actually not even Titleist balls but knock-offs with Titleist logo painted on. The practice balls are straight from Titleist if you find them in the black and white box and usually around $29.99.

This is great advice, I keep used balls in a shag bag which I take to practice with me and also keep 6 used balls in my bag to warm up my short game before I go play.

I've been asked by playing partners why I use Pro V1's in my shag bag for short game practice. Because that's what I use when I play is my answer every time.

These same people pick up any & every ball on the course they find & throw them in their bag or they say this will be a good practice ball????

Now I have video proof on how important it is. Thanks for posting this Rick.

I've also had some ask if they could borrow my shag bag for a round of golf because it's all used Pro V1's..... Lol

  10. I practised for years, just using what the course put out for people.....then a wise older gentleman said “wouldn’t it be great to have practice balls that match our on course golf ball”, from that day on, I always put my Pro V1X ball after each round into my shag bag. Then after each season, I clean those out and start again so I am practising with the current iteration of the Pro V1x as those have changed a lot over the years.

Excellent info. For my practice, I usually use ball (name brands) I find on the course and use them at the range and as far as putting/chipping I sue my balls that I will be using in my bag..

Thanks for weighing in, everyone. Hope James' advice helps you as much as it's helped me!

And as James says, you don't need a whole shag bag of practice balls. Six or so is actually preferable, because it forces you to move around and hit a greater variety of shots vs. hitting a hundred chips from the same spot. Fits in with James' thoughts on RANDOM PRACTICE. Check this video out to learn more!

  14. Good insight! I love Pinehills, l play there every year when my family and I head up to the area for vacation. One of the best courses around Plymouth area in my opinion.

When I see folks chipping and putting with the familiar striped range balls I just shake my head...it's pretty much a waste of their time!

    Great Tip!!!
I actually have a Shag Bag full pf PRACTICE Balls.
Both Prov1 and Prov1x...these are great for long sessions.
When I need to get more dialed in I make sure all the balls match then have at it.
Only issue with nice Titleist Practice balls is that my son steals them from time to time and launches them into the range.....ARGH!!!

    Cheers,

    Good stuff.

Really makes a difference getting used to one ball and knowing how it will react for each shot!

    Great tips there Rick.

Not too many good practice areas my way but using my own shag bag and balls makes a big difference. On the putting green I use 3 new ProV1xs before the first tee.
