Interested to know, how many of you put the bats away in the winter months to perhaps protect your handicap, and if so do just keep your swing on the go down at the range unless you play all the way through the winter months . ?

Neil, always play right through and try to make the range once a week. Weather can be poor but it’s great to play on those dry (but cold) days.

I play in a Sunday winter sweep, October to March, lowest 5 scores out of 7 takes the trophy
Every shot under par gets cut a full shot from your starting handicap lol
Great banter with good guys and interesting golfing in wintery frosty conditions haha Fore!!!
  4. Neil,
As we've had a mild/late autumn, I've managed to get out twice a week until the end of November. Got thoroughly cold and wet on the last Thursday in November at a friend's course so I'm down to one trip to the driving range per week, with a run out at my own club on a Tuesday... if the weather is good. That will do for me. I can't cope with swing maintenance when wearing four layers plus full waterproofs!

At my club, we play the "Blue" course in winter. As the Blue has not been "Done" by the Authority and, as it differs from the approved Yellow/White course by more yards that the allowable margin set out in the guidance, we can't submit returns for handicap purposes until we go back to the Yellow/White summer tees. Such are the vagaries of the World Handicap System. Seems our handicaps are - for good or ill - "Protected" until Spring/Easter comes into view!!

  5. Definitley play right through Winter - once a week if possible. I will have to warm up more beforehand though as this last friday i got straight out of the car on to the tee - freezing cold - on the the 3rd hole i had this sharp pain in my shoulder during a swing, thought oh this is going to go away, next full swing i couldnt complete it, had to walk off the course. Now been to sport injury specialist and i have strained the AC muscle in the top of the shoulder - now out for 4 weeks! I always thought as a fairly fit 30 yr old i could just go straight to the tee and smash it! Lesson learnt!

Try to play as much through the winter as much as possible. Nice to get out in the air after a tough week at work and try to not get too stressed about the score at this time of year.

Same here James. Will try to get out whenever possible, a lot of time the thought of winter golf is worse than actually getting out there and playing.

Will try and get to some links courses for some good condition winter golf too!
  8. Hmm sat with a glass of wine watching golf of TV I think to myself I can’t wait to play, then I look out of window with the icy cold rain beating down and think better of it!
So it’s once or twice a month for me
  9. I’ll be out this weekend whatever as just missed a few weeks with injury.

I have to admit to getting a little soft - I did get a rechargeable handwarmer last Xmas along with Titleist mitts and winter gloves for each hand.

I enjoy golf whatever the weather apart from driving rain when having minus windchill.
  10. My golf buddy and I generally play once a week. If the weather is good we’ll play both days at the weekend. Plus we usually get a couple of extra rounds in over the Christmas period
  11. Still try get out as much as possible.
The handicap is what is in my eyes, I don’t the number too serious haha, and if anything I think it gives more of a rounding off to my game as it puts you in lies and situations that you learn to play out from which you can adapt to any weather but also any style is course!

    Morning Neil,

In the winter I do prefer to spend time on the range once or twice a week. I like to spend time working on the short game and around the 80/100 yards shots.

Maybe have the odd 1 or 2 rounds a month but always depending on the weather!

On long Island as long as no snow, ice or windy we (I) are good to play.

Always in! Sat 4 ball with mates. Sunday quick 9 holes pm then practice green for chipping practice. Tues or the night at range for tweaking…still pants though!
  15. Roll up still going 3 times a week 7.50 start so can be bracing sometimes. Preceded by an hour's walk to the course because of these COVID times we live in. Plus usually a comp at weekend. Came out of shorts end of November.

Playing away at the moment mainly links golf as it’s nice and dry underfoot. it’s just to keep the swing going through the winter.

I enjoy playing all year round, although I definitely have a much more relaxed approach to winter golf. I find that watching professional golf on TV throughout the winter really gets me excited for the upcoming season, particularly given the exotic locations they play, whilst we're getting by with about 8 hours of daylight. Watching the Bahamas last week was a great way to escape as well as the Desert Swing on the European Tour and the 2 events in Hawaii. Very much looking forward to Spring time in the UK but winter isn't all bad from a golfing perspective.

I try and play once every couple of weeks as the course is usually wet.
I spend more time working on my putting and short game.
When I do get out on the course I just enjoy the walk and try and hit creative shots (Hi, Low, Draws, Cuts etc...) all in all just have some fun really keeping my swing ticking over.
  19. Chance would be a fine thing! Courses been shut here in wales preety much for 3 weeks solid

Greens however were amazing. very true.

We have had 9 holes open most of the time but it is certainly very wet this year. Just 9 open again today but good to get out and put learning from lessons into action on the course!

Yep, play as often as I can in any weather, spend a lot of time at work so need to let off steam ha ha….
Heated gloves on trolley if trolleys are allowed. But it’s been quite mild really compared to years ago.
    Long may it continue
