    Hmm simple terms, lol

As I understand it you have a course handicap, index and a competition playing handicap.

Using mine as an example would be index x(course slope /113)

    9.5x(118/113)=9.9 course handicap=10

Playing in competitions I would be 95 % of 10 as per R&A USPGA rules.

Handicap index is calculated from 20 consecutive scores.

Im sure there is more to it if you haven't posted 20 scores.

  3. In simple terms????? Not a chance... The world has become besotted with Algorithms, but basically, look it up on the boards by the first tee. However, if you want to discuss it in the bar, there are some Common Terms to make it sound as if you know what it's all about: -
    * World Handicap Index (WHI) - (Allocated to you based on scores you have posted)
    * Course Rating (Par for whichever colour course you are playing)
    * Slope Rating (Degree of difficulty allocated to the course by R&A)
    * Format (% of handicap allowed for the game you're playing)
Stirred vigorously, that equals Playing Handicap.

    Hi #TeamTitleist,
Since 1 March 2021 the new Handicap System is in place. This handicap system should bring all golf players to one system with the same calculation (formula).

In the transition you will see that your current HCP is higher rated then you might expected to be.
This is due to the formula that is used.

The new handicap system all comes down to the last 8 best qualifying of the last 20 rounds you played.
If you play a round of golf you won't see your new handicap, right away. This is due to a change that's made every night in the golf industry by the federations. In there there will be looking at all scores during that day has been made on the course you have been playing at. It some times the course is more difficult than usual, due to weather conditions, the day result will be better via versa. So if you want it to be as accurate as possible.. Play as many rounds as you can qualifying.

It is a pretty straightforward system frpm an end user point of view, which some people like to over complicate.

Your old handicap is now a handicap-index, which is calculated from the best 8 scores from the last 20 rounds.

Wherever you play, you take your handicap-index and look at the WHS Index Tables of the tees you are about to play on, and you will see the Course-Handicap you will use for that round; any adjustments for competitions are applied to this Course-Handicap.

I feel it’s fair to the point it reflects on your current form but to explain it to anyone “not a clue!” I just check it the morning after and take what I’m given.

Oh it’s quite simple to understand.

If you shoot a score lower than your handicap then your handicap will go down, unless a round you played at some point last year was lower, in which case it will go up, except it might not if you haven’t taken into account the weather conditions on the day and of course the weather last year, the tees you played off and the relative performance of other competitors in the field both now and then.

I struggle to see how some people have trouble with it?

All of the above have pretty much covered it all.

Our club had a handy booklet "Rules of Handicapping - Player Reference Guide". I believe these can be ordered from England Golf.

Things not mentioned above include: General Play or social rounds except matchplay where individual scores are recorded (medal or Stableford) within the rules of golf (i.e no Gimmes). You should register before play on your clubs system or England Golf that you intend to submit a score.

If you don't complete a hole or a round don't worry as long as 9 holes have been completed you'll get a 9 hole score or 10 holes completed for an 18 hole score. Don't forget to enter your scores on the system after your round otherwise if it's not done on the day it might not be counted.

Until you have a minimum of 8 qualifying rounds, your index will be an average of the rounds submitted, and once 9 and up to 20 rounds are completed it's the average of the best 8.

I've just moved clubs and my WHI has moved over seamlessly and I've done away rounds using England Golf App which I believe logs you in via the clubs wifi so it knows which club you're at.

Other than that just submit your scores and enjoy playing to a more accurate handicap on every course.
