While on holiday, I ended up playing a club competition at a friends club. It was a fun format called "mystery alliance" where every fourball played together as team with a different format of scoring for each hole.
The mystery element was that you didn't know the format for the hole up until you got to the green and a little note was stuck to the flag stick advising the format for that hole eg: Player A score + Player B or Player A x Player C or all four scores to count etc
It was a pretty fun game until we got to the Par 5 15th hole (playing very well as a group and in contention of winning the competition) when one of our group (Player A) hit the green in two and was left with 6 footer for Eagle, two of us (Players B and C) were on the green for 3 with make-able birdie putts and the fourth (Player D) - who was collectively advised not go for the green - ended up hitting several bad and duff shots and was putting 8.
As we got up to the green to see what the format was for that hole was, our hearts sunk - PLAYER A multiplied by PLAYER D - The Eagle Putt - which he holed - counted for absolutely zero!
As you can imagine, the mood quickly went dark!!!
