Putter Change

  1. With one of the most publicized putter changes taking place this week in practice, from his now famous GSS Newport 2, to a mallet style putter... How many of you have made the change from a blade to a mallet? What made you switch? Did it end up being a permanent or temporary switch?

Personally, I've been trying out a mallet style just at home. My Studio Style GSS Insert Newport 2 is still played for rounds. There was a short period of time where I wasn't holing any putts due to a number of reasons. I think feeling the stability of the mallet, along with more practice in general, brought me back to my better putting ways; however, I still use the blade for rounds.

Agreed. I've tinkered with various mallet putters, as well as others, but I always go back and play my Cameron Newport 2. It's an older model, probably from early 2000s, but I don't think I could every place another putter in the bag and have any comfort.
  3. Just changed from a Non-Scotty blade and got fitted for a Futura 5.5M mallet. Been going thru the same cycles with different putters and I actually went through a putter fitting. Took a few adjustments but I’ve been putting great so far with it. Gives me more confidence on the short ones.

Yep, I have a Studio Style Newport 2.5 and a GoLo 3. I switch back and forth but seem to always come back to the Newport 2.5. I lag better with the GoLo 3 but just can't seem to line up the short ones as well as I can with the blade, especially on fast greens.

Robert, I love that Studio that you have and wish I had kept mine. Sold it to my nephew a few years back for his entry level into Scotty Cameron. I have two styles, the Newport 2.5 and the Newport 2.5 Notchback (own two of these, one is the black model and the other is 2016 chrome model, the last year they made them). I tend to use the Notchback more. I feel that I hit them more in the middle of face and therefore on line. Guess if you have something going you stick with it. I did make one change to the Notchback putters, mine are 35" and I changed the weights on the from 10gm to 15gm.

In my humble opinion, change only occurs when there's a dip in energy.

The old adage still applies, when you're feeling down, lay down until the feeling goes away.

Mostly it's that 6 inch space, the great unknown, where all the mysteries and answer are.

Whatever can bring more energy into that unknown orb, I say, bring it on.

Whether that be a new putter, a new ball or a new change in any facet of your life.

When I was fitted at the Scotty Cameron Gallery a few years ago, Spencer told me the best info I could hear.

All of my six Cameron putters were fine for me.

I was looking for some Sage advice.

Which Cameron putter would do, "the trick."

"The Trick," I've learned, is the one that sparks the most excitement within me.

Just like when the latest PROV's were launched.

The first time I played one, I played my best.

    Why...?

Because I was the most excited to play it.

In my mind, it was the best ball ever produced.

The greatest excitement I get is when I snap open a new ProV or AVX and play with the clubs I'm tour fitted with at TPI in Oceanside.

And, I've had a total physical exam of my golf game at TPI.

I know I've done all I can do.

All I need to do now, is, "Do it."

I'm getting a little too philosophical and psychological, I can't help it, it's my background.

The bottom line is, in golf and in life, do what makes you happy.

    What gives you energy.

    What gets you excited.

    Golf is a game.

    Play it!

I've literally tried half the Scotty Cameron Mallets and always go back to my regular Newport, something about the simpleness of it, I recently as in last week tried the 6m and actually really like it but trying both at the putting green my dispersion was better with the Newport... as reiterated by a few fellows the mallets seem to give a little more confidence up close but that doesn't always mean they go in up close, it's a weird affect... this will sound weird but if I'm playing the MB blades which I am now I only want pure simplicity in my bag, no hybrids or mallet putters... but If I put the ap2's in the bag and some hybrids I'm willing to also change the putter..... man I hate myself
  8. I played a blade style for 30 years. When I went to upgrade to a Scotty I had every intention of buying the Newport 2, I thought I would try the 6M Dual Balance and fell in love. I bought that putter because I could roll the ball so much better. This year I have averaged 1.7 putts/hole this season.

I have a few 009’s and several Newport style putters, but at the moment I have been putting with a 2014 GoLo 5. I don’t see the GoLo unseating my main gamer ( see avatar) but it is a nice change of pace.

Tried switching to a GoLo several years and can't do it. I putt best with a Newport/009 or Newport 2.
