i think the small lines are there to help with breaking putts. line up marker (long lines) toward hole, then set line on your ball with one of the small lines depending on direction and severity of break.

They are used to align your mark on the ball to the line that you intend to hit your putt on.

this is a Scotty Cameron Circle T Alignment aid ball marker for helping you read and line up your putts! so if its left edge or right edge, dead straight... helps you see your putt, a lot of people are all see and feel when they play, but that is a really sweet ball marker right there!

Also i believe its for the direction of club face path for those little breaking putts or testy knee knockers.
This particular Ball Marker is my all time favorite from SC. I find that its very helpful for visual type of people, it gives you a great indication where to start/hit your putt!

Scotty's Ball Tool
It's not just another ball marker. Far from it. It truly is a new invention from Scotty in his pursuit to bring you Tools for the Art of Golf. Its name is the Golf Ball Alignment Tool. In short, Scotty calls it the Ball Tool.
It's USGA, R&A and PGA Tour conforming, has been put in play by a number of touring professionals, and is now available on ScottyCameron.com to Club Cameron members.
This 1 3/16" square piece of milled stainless steel with a ball-shaped cut-out may just change the way you putt forever. The idea is simple. Use the line on your ball in conjunction with the milled lines and "tick" marks on the Ball Tool to envision the line you want to putt on. Whether it's the break you've chosen or a straight line to the cup, the Ball Tool was designed to help you find the line and make more putts.
Here's how it works:
Step 1
When marking your ball on the green with the Ball Tool, take a look at your line or break and set the Ball Tool down along your chosen line using the three large milled lines on the Ball Tool to choose your general line or break to the hole. Then, pick up your ball.
Step 2
After picking up your ball, you can then step back and sight in your chosen line to the cup using the Ball Tool's three lines to create what Scotty calls the ''railroad effect''. These are the imaginary lines on which we try to envision the ball tracking to the hole. Say you've lined up the center of the Ball Tool a little left. Look at the smaller tick marks on the Ball Tool and determine how far. Did you miss a half-tick, one or two?
Step 3
When you're ready to putt, use the A.I.M (Alignment Integrated Marking) sidestamp on your Titleist -- or your own line -- and set it along the center line on the Ball Tool.
Step 4
Remembering that you originally aimed the Ball Tool a little left of your chosen line, ''dial'' in the line on your ball (don't move the Ball Tool) according to the number of ''ticks'' you think you were off.
Step 5
Pick up the Ball Tool, then putt using the line you've chosen.

Thank you, these instructions provide better clarification - especially the don't move the mark, but use the line on the marker you've chosen as your second read.

Although, I've always heard the advice to trust your first read...between that and my poor eyesight and not knowing if it's two or three sub-ticks off the first read, I think this marker would drive me nuts. ;-)

They're alignment indicators to help line up your putt after you've marked the ball. From my understanding, this goes in front of the ball. But I may be wrong.

That is a very unique ball marker! that is too much detail for me and my game! LOL! just the 3 broad red guidelines would work for me!
