Hey guys, I have 35 inch Newport 2.5. I have used 35 inch for as long as i can remember. I recently played around with e 33 inch putter at a golf shop, and it felt amazing!

Anyone who has shortened their own putters have any advice or insight to the process, if its worth it or not and what factors are involved?

    Thanks

  2. Shortening the club by 2" will reduce the swingweight significantly so you need to add heavier weights in the sole. Just keep this in mind, unless you order new then it will come with the heavier weights standard.

    FWIW, Good Luck!
  3. For awhile I was playing a 35 and was choking down about an inch. I wanted to replace the grip anyway so I just popped off the grip and trimmed and inch off. Much better. With a putter it's about feel. If you like the feel of the shorter putter cut it

I have a Newport select that I on the advice of a local fitter have it cut to 33 3/4. What it did for me was now I was putting with my shoulders and not my hands or body. This really helped to save a lot of three putts now I'm 5ft 5in now I see. At address about one ball inside of putting line.not outside line making for more misread putts.hope this helps

I bought a futura that was 36".....I couldnt pass up the deal. I was used to a 33 and Im sure it was mental but I couldnt putt with it. I removed grip using lightly compressed air and cut it down to 33, re-installed grip. Now I love it. I changed the weighting by machining my own custom ones.

Eric, I too was at 35" forever until I went to Spencer for a fitting at Scotty's Gallery. He cut it down to 34" and it absolutely feels better and reduces operator error! Roll them smooth!

    Eric H,
As Chris92008 told you in his answer, it will reduce the swingweight a lot. The head of putter will feel very light. Look on Scotty Cameron site or make a research. I saw a document telling which weight you need to arrive to desire swingweight or normal swingweight when you cut the shaft.

Hi Eric, I also play a Newport 2.5, I bought the club 34" long & It instantly felt right , being only 5'10" tall the longer shafts just didn't suit my set up. I don't know what the the effect would be to shorten your existing Putter but I would sure find out if you really liked the feel of the shorter one. Good luck.
  9. chopped a couple newports down an inch from 34 to 33 it will make it lighter also help if you stand with your eye line more over top the ball but i recently went left hand low and for me I will need to buy another 34 or 35 as my eye line moved more back away from the ball
  10. I'm 5' 9" So a few years ago went to 34 from 35 and it instantly helped my putting. 35in made me too "handsey" which caused "the yips" to occur. Now go left-hand low with 34in and putting is much better.

I think it’s comical people always immediately run to the “it throws off the swing weight!!”

While obviously removing a Portion of an object removes weight.... people are too quick to discount how it feels and how it helps someone execute their stroke.. I have so many Scotty Cameron’s, they are all sizes. I’ve had the Scotty custom shop work on some, I’ve worked on some. I absolutely love 33” it took me experimenting to find what works best for me. People act like taking an inch off a putter makes messes it all up or you need to add lead tape or weight which is hilarious. You may or may not but personally, I’ve seen more people shorten a putter and love it and putt better....

I think Chris has made a very good point and probably has more knowledge about Cameron putters than most people on this site. I agree that putting is about feel but proper weighting can affect the feel and performance of the putter.

Eric, I went from a 35 inch GoLo to a 33. Unbelievable difference for me. The sole weights are 20 grams as opposed to 10 grams in the 35, but I putt better with the short putter.

Go with what feel good to you, you can add weight to the head as well as the butt of the shaft (counterweight) very easily. Play around, experiment until it feels right to you.
