So I was considering changing the stock gram weights in my Newport 2.  I was wondering what impact it would have?

My thoughts are the heavier gram weight will make it easier on slower greens (more mass behind the ball?)  Wasn't sure what kind of effect it would have on my stroke, if any.

Just wanted to see everyone's thoughts before I do it.  A lot of time to do some tinkering during the winter off-season.

    Thanks :)

    Hi Chris,

The reverse of what you think is usually the case. Players will switch to a heavier putter for faster greens. It has more to do with you tempo than anything. Think of a analog metronome. When you put the weight to the tip, the needle moves slower. The less weight at the tip, the faster it swings.

If you have a tendency to overshoot your putts (swinging too fast), or have a jerky take away, I would look into adding more weight.

Great ... thanks for the insight guys.  I have ordered the set of weights to tinker around with it and see if it affects my stroke at all.  Will let you know the results ... of course when the weather breaks.

When I got fitted for my Scotty Cameron Futura X5R it came with 10g. We fooled around with different weights and decided that 15g was best for me. It slowed my stroke down a bit.

Some additional info on weight can be found in this SC putter guide.

    "Weight
For most players, the standard Scotty Cameron weight configuration will
produce the ideal balance and feel to execute the proper stroke. If your
stroke tends to decelerate, if your hands get too active, or if you have too
much wrist break, you should consider a heavier head or a Dual Balance
putter that is heavier overall. "

I had the Scotty Cameron Custom Shop put 20g weights in my Notchback and it definitely helps my tempo and smooth out the stroke overall.

I've always liked a light putter. I felt it gave me more control, especially on fast greens. But it sounds like traditional wisdom says it should be the opposite. It's a been a long time since I've tried a heavy putter and I do have an issue with not always having a smooth take away. It might be time to give one a try and see if it makes a difference.

I've used 15g weights in my 35 in. Scotty's since switching almost 10 years ago. I think its helped me with tempo and head stabilization. I really didn't notice it until I moved to Hawaii last April and started putting on greens that are a little faster than what I have been used to. I have always leaned more toward the feel side for my equipment rather than accept what comes stock with most clubs.
