If the goal is to get better and make meaningful improvements, what do you think is the right mix of practice vs lessons vs strength/conditioning vs playing, and how often should each be done per week/month? Any thoughts?

I exercise everyday and I think everyone should. I have better results playing for practice than I do going to the range. I do like to have instruction once a year for a tune up.

It really depends on how your game is; If there is inconsistency, I will goto range about once every 2 days and see if I can resolve my issues; if I cannot fix it, then I get a lesson with a golf instructor. as for conditioning, I try to be flexible and make sure that I don't have issues turning my shoulder.

I was thinking of asking that same question. So I am working out 3 times a week (Orange Theory) plus using the Dynamic Golfing app for stretching and flexibility. As far as practice and play, I’m on the range two days a week and putting 3 times a week ( at least 30 minutes) plus I’m using a swing coach every other week. Progress has been slow but I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and seeing improvements and feeling way better.
  5. Even when I am in a tournament. I feel like I am still at practice. Since I'm still learning shots and how to shape shots. I feel like I able to do things better when it's on the line. If that makes since.

Depending on your age and physical capabilities, I think 2-3 times a week for both is a target. Some stretching exercises are a must for flexibility, and a little resistance training if possible. Speed and good technique have to work together. I work out (stretching/band exercises) every other day doing something strength/flexibility related, and I'm 59 years old. Don't let anyone tell you have to lose distance with age, if you put in a little effort, you can offset it significantly.

Great question! I think this would be goal-specific. And a person could have more than 1 goal also. Mine is to get into a single digit handicap but at the same time to ward off 'Father Time' (quoting Dr Greg Rose). My stats show that my Fairways in regulation and putting is costing too many strokes so my focus is on speed training (using the Stack System as well as 'contrast training' ie. Strength and Power) so that I can have a faster cruising speed without compromising accuracy and spending 75% of my range time on the practice green (again using the Stack Putting app). What are your goals?

    Thanks for the great responses.

I think my goal is similar to most semi-serious recreational golfers - hit in the high 70's / low 80s from 6300-6600, sight unseen, with the chance of shooting in the mid 70s but knowing they'll be some low 90s in there. I think that translates to a sub 5 handicap, (which I smelt what it was like for a couple of months!!!)

    Exercise:
At least 3 times per week
try to do some type of stretching everyday

    Lessons:
I take a couple of lessons over the off season, usually early February and another one in March
Then one more some time in July to keep things in line

    Practice/Playing:
    Winter
range time 1 or 2 times a week
Practice putting nightly at home (use the new Put Out putting green

    In Season
range 2 to 3 times per week
Play twice a week - 9 holes after work
18 holes when I can fit it in

Full Body workout is 4 days a week
In season - Range time is 3 times a month
Chipping & Putting practice is once every week.
Lessons - Only when I cannot solve the problem or at least see improvement in the issue at hand.

At 61, it's vital to spend time doing a solid full body workout. My golf game suffers if my body doesn't have the ability to turn and release the club very well.
