i wuz wondering about which of the three to put into my bag. a 2 iron cb is more difficult to hit but is great to keep down. a 5 wood is versatile off the tee and turf. and a hybrid gets the ball up nicely. what should i get.

    thanks

Frankie: I would test all the options with an Advanced fitter near you.  You can find one at www.fittingworks.com.

    Ryan makes a great point.

My take is why would you want a 2 iron just to keep the ball down. There are other options.  Just my 2 cents.

In comparing the 2 iron, 5 wood or hybrid, I would look at the pros.  Most have removed the  2 iron from their bags and are carrying either the 5 wood or hybrid.   The 5 wood is used to get a ball in the air  and generally because of its characteristics is very hard to keep low.  While the hybrid can be hit high or low with very little manipulation, it just depends on ball positioning.

Golf Digest in its Feb. 2011 issue compare a 19degree 5 wood to a 19degree hybrid and found that there effectiveness is determined by swing speed.  100mph swing produced same distance with both clubs, just ball flight differed. 85mph swing produced significant differences, 5 wood was much longer than the hybrid.

Completely up to what you want out of the club, I have a 5 wood, but I've just ordered a CB 2 iron specifically because when its windy (as its been for about 3 months now here in wales!) the 5 wood balloons too much, and the course I play a 2 iron could be very useful. Also if I start playing a bit of links golf as I hope to, keeping the ball low and hitting off the very tight lies is going to help. I don't like hybrids, they don't fit my swing and I don't feel confident with them. I seem to always try and sweep them when I should be hitting them like a long iron. I'd love to like them, as many of my friends pay with them and man do they look easy to hit but I seem to be in the minority of long iron players instead of gentleman persuader players (my friends name for his ping i15 hybrids!).

So as Ryan said get fitted and see what's best for your game at your course!

Frankie, I think you've got the right idea on each club. Try them all out, see what you hit the most consistently for the distance and conditions you normally play, and put the best one for your game in the bag. What works for some won't work for others. If I had to pick one of the three, I'd go hybrid. Like you've already said, 2 iron is pretty tough to hit, and 5 wood is designed to get up in the air, so the hybrid is kinda in the middle where it's designed to help you get the ball in the air fairly easily, but the look also gives you confidence to flight the ball down if you need to. Good luck!

Personally i use and would recommend the hybrid. It gets the ball nice and high so you can stick greens and it is much easier out of the rough than a 2 iron. Also works well off the tee. But try to hit all 3 and see which one you like or fits your game better. Hope this helps!
