I played them in the 1970's to early 1980's. As you can see, the cover was more durable than the balata balls but you could still put a "smile" across it and break the inner windings which will expand the cover and create a significant lump causing them to be out-of-round pretty significantly. I used to carry a metal ring that you could spin the ball through to check and see if that was happening because sometimes it would not be very noticeable.
