Getting used to backspin

    So after I’ve purchased my clubs, I went and purchased some Pro V1 balls because they were best for me during the fitting process. They’ve been amazing and produced a lot of spin on my approaches to the greens. That being said, how do you get used to predicting the placement of the ball needed for a shot?

    For you aim past the flag every time! More club or go harder than you normally would to get that added distance then pull that string and have the ball come back towards the pin.

    Did you choose the ProV1x or the ProV1 Balls? The x has a slightly sharper attack angle which may create more backspin when hitting the green.

    Regardless, If I am spinning the ball back 10 yards I just add that amount to the shot. One needs to understand the green and where the false fronts and sides are as well since you need to avoid those to stay on the dance floor.

    Thanks for your responses guys! I definitely appreciate the advice. I’ve been playing the Pro V1 because I thought that was a better suit to my play style through the fitting process. Judging by how the backspin has been so sharp, I’m glad I didn’t go with the V1X judging from the V1s performance. I certainly didn’t think to take out more club and hit it softer to minimize spin Todd. Thanks again for responding Chris, Todd, and Alex!

    Now you have to learn to control the spin.
    Shallow the attack angle or take one more club and hit it softer to minimize the spin. But it's a lot of fun to fly it past the hole and zip it back to the pin.

    You could always play a ball that spins less. Try the ball selector on the site and choose “my ball spins back too far”.

    Another tip is to take an extra club and hit more of a knock down type of shot. They spin a lot less.

    Instead of using a hard gap wedge, hit an easy PW. It will have a better chance of taking two hops and stopping versus taking one bounce and pulling back 10'.

    Just another shot to add to your arsenal.

    Hitting a knock-down lowers the trajectory but actually INCREASE the spin rate.

    My best advise will be: watch more games! Try to understand players’ decisions on there approach shots. When spin rate is too high, there are always things we can do to optimize the best ball position on green.

    On a slow uphill green, you should almost never leave the ball before flag(if the pin isn’t in the very back.) However, on a fast steep downhill green, you would be happy to Land it short and have a massive spin!

    I haven't been able to spin the ball on the dance floor since the balata covers went away. I've played the PROV1 for years, the AVX for a few months, and then recently changed to the V1X to increase my distance. I was surprised to find the V1X gives me the backspin on the greens. I always though the V1X would not provide me any backspin. So the distance and spin with the V1X fits my game. Something else I learned was that by moving the ball forward in my stance (middle stance plus 1 or 2 inches forward of middle), it allows the ball to stop-not spin back or release forward-but just stop. For me to generate the backspin, I place the ball middle stance minus 1 inch. Like Todd S stated, now it's a matter of learning to control how much backspin is created. Constantly learning more about this game!

    I have never had a problem with spinning the ball back too far (i.e. more than a couple feet of backup, if that). More often I have the problem of not spinning it enough and needing to figure out a way to play for it releasing forward too much.

    That said, if I were doing the sort of spin-back you're talking about more than once in a great while I'd find a ball that spins less than a Pro V1/Pro V1x. Golf's a hard enough game without having to account for sucking a ball back off the front of a green.

    Try the AVX. I found it had noticeably less spin on iron shots than Pro V1x. And some of the better players at my club found the same thing.

    You’ll just learn to control your spin as you play more and get used to your clubs more
