As someone who has fully embraced fall/early winter golf the past few years, I've realized that the conditions tend to neutralize the advantages of the ProV1 and ProV1X. Whether this be cold temps, less than ideal green conditions or just leaves that like to cover up my ball!

What does everyone else like to play towards the end of the season? Do you stick with your usual ball or switch to something else?

    Grip it and Rip it!

I usually tend to stay with the same ball year round, but last winter I bought a dozen DT TruSofts and used them through the winter. Great ball on the rally cold days, doesn't feel like your hitting a rock since they are fairly soft and they feel nice off the putter face. At the price point, it's a great ball to try for cold weather use...IMHO.
  3. I would stick with your current ball, ProV1 etc....

I used to switch then I realized the conditions affect all golf balls and I might as well keep my ball consistent.

    Good Luck!

DON'T CHANGE YOUR BALL WITH THE WEATHER- change your expectations.

If you switch balls, you'll change every shot you take. Spin, feel, distance- everything changes with a rock substitution. Sure the ball will perform differently in the colder climate, but honestly you'll lose more from wearing extra layers and your body being cold than you will with the ball. If you're worried about distance loss, just move up a set of tees.
Also keep in mind that most cold weather areas stop accepting rounds for hcp after 11/15 so everything is just a practice round after that. I say just enjoy the bonus golf and game the ball you normally game.
    We'll be shoveling soon enough...

Gotta agree with the guys... stay with the Titleist ball you play year round.

    Great post, Josh.

Try NXT Tour S ball. Will feel softer in the cold weather and if you lose one under some leaves, it won't hurt your wallet as much.

DT TruSofts feel so much nicer during those cold day practice rounds.
Also keep second ball in my pocket and switch every hole.
Lost balls under those beautified fall leaves are only half the price.
Enjoy those days you can before the S..w

I play my Prov1s the year round, but played a sleeve of the DT TruSofts during the colder months and they are a good soft ball. Would give them a good review.

I stay with Pro-V. What i need to do is not worry about score if the tee box is too frozen to accept a tee. all balls will pop up high once the greens are frozen.

I switch from ProV1x to NXT Tours. Mainly for cost reasons. Loosing a dozen ProV's in the leaves or mud in a couple rounds gets expensive and I'm more likely to just drop a new ball than spend a lot of time looking it. That keeps me playing instead of getting aggravated hunting balls.

My recommendation is to play whatever ball you are used to. For me, it's a Pro V1.

My secret, (which I have mentioned a number of times when this question comes up, typically around this time of year) is to warm 4 or 5 Pro Vs before leaving home by wrapping them in an electric heating pad for 20 minutes. As I walk out the door, I unplug the heating pad and grab the whole thing, still wrapped up with the balls inside. I then stuff everything into the insulated pocket of by bag (which has been stored inside overnight and is at room temperature). The balls stay warm for at least an hour this way. (In lieu of taking the whole heating pad, you can also wrap them in a couple layers of tin foil, but the heating pad option seems to keep them warmer for a longer period.)

Since I live next door to my home course, I can get at least the first few holes in with a new, warm Pro V off of each tee. After each hole, I put the ball played for the hole into an inside pocket to use my body heat to help it warm up somewhat, and take another fresh ball for the next hole. By the 3rd or 4th hole, the balls in the insulated compartment are cooling down, but still much warmer than those that have been already played outside on the previous holes.

By the back nine, there isn't a whole lot of warmth left in the balls other than that which I created with my own body heat, but at least those first few holes were played with balls that felt like normal, and fairly soft off the clubface, which can give a little advantage, both in distance and psychologically. And, it is within the rules, since you are not heating the balls artificially during the round. However, once winter comes, if you live in a cooler climate, you can't post GHIN scores anyway, so the rules don't really limit what you do out there. But on those 45* cold mornings, while still "in-season," a little advantage within the rules isn't a bad thing.

    Just my 2 cents.

I never change balls regardless of the weather.

I play the NXT Tour in the colder fall weather and they really work well for me and feel good and go long!!!!!

I stick with my Pro V1 in all weather conditions and adjust my game, club selection and expections to suit the conditions. I just consider shorter distance, mud balls and leaves as "rub of the green" and make the best of it. If I happen to shoot a stellar score it's a bonus. Otherwise, I'm just biding my time till I head to FL for the winter.
