I have Louisville Golf persimmon clubs that I bought in 2010 (Niblick Vanguard 5 wood, Niblick Even Stripe 10 wood, HL3 34 hybrid).   I still play with the 34 hybrid and use various modern golf balls with no problem.  I did crack the head on the 5 wood on the hosel but that was because the shaft loosened (LVG fixed it free of charge).  The 10 wood is a bit ratty looking because I used it a lot for a year.

Please Titleist - jump in as well.

I play with someone that wll tune up his persimmons (mostly from Louisville?) but will use lower compression balls.  For actual wood club competitions he does use balata balls or some other antique.  Other than the compression, I think his primary reason is actually cost.  His other set (metals) are mostly Titleist.  TT can correct me, but I think the DT Solo is the lowest compression ball, if that make a difference with those old clubs. The DT 90 is a fairly stiff ball compared to the 50's and 60's in the marketplace.

My dad used to use the 100 compression Titleist balls back in the old days.

I hit a Titleist Black with my persimmon 34H the other day and still got 5 more yards vs my 7 iron. Although the persimmon 10 wood is less forgiving, I can hit it pretty close to the distance of my 4H.  The Vanguard persimmon isn't too great for distance.

Question to Titleist Staff: Is there any Titleist that I should not use with persimmon woods?

You can use most any ball with your Louisville Golf Persimmon wood. Most modern balls are soft and feel great coming off the face of a Persimmon wood. One important consideration when choosing a golf ball is trajectory, or spin. A Persimmon wood traditionally spins the ball less than a metal “wood” with the same loft so if you have a smoother swing you might want to play a ball with a higher spin rate, especially if you find your trajectory is lower than what you want.

That Louisville 10 wood was my go to middle club and I could drop it on a dime from 160 yards.  I referred to it and my HL3 34H as the "one-two punch" for about a year.
