Inbetween shaft flexes?

  1. I notice that the custom booklet shows the spin and launch effect of ordering certain stock shafts tipped 1 inch.  What effect does this have on flex ? For example with the Diamana Kali for Titleist I am looking for something between an R and an S flex.  Would an R ordered with 1 inch of tipping effectively get me to that (ie R+) ?

    Douglas,

While tipping a shaft has an effect on spin, it will also play a factor on flex.  Though it is not an exact science, generally tipping a shaft will change the flex by about a half.  If you order a regular flex, and tip it 1" it will ultimately play slightly stiffer than a regular and slightly softer than a stiff.

Doug, To add to Ryans reply, he is exactly correct in saying it's not an exact science. The thing with tipping is that it all depends on what shaft it is as well because the same amount of tipping on 2 different shafts wont always have the same effect. (ie 1" tipping on 1 shaft may change the flex by 1/2 of a flex and on another shaft make it could be closer to a full flex. ) This is also why a single frequency number from shaft to shaft doesn't really mean anything, they are good for matching the same shafts but can not be used to compare shaft to shaft without more information. Hope this helps a little and yes if you are looking to get a driver shaft to play between a reg and a stiff then I would order it tipped 1"
  4. Thank you Matthew. It is a 910 F 3 wood I will be buying - I found the demo S flex Kali felt a touch stiff and I usually find my best success is with shafts that are are sligthtly stronger than R but not full on S flex, so that is why i was looking to acheive an inbetween. Doug

You may want to consider trying the Project X shafts.  Their stiffness is rated using a numbered scheme and includes increments of 0.5.  The "tour issue" models also let you get different shaft weights for the same flex and torque.  This really lets you dial in to what you need.

My Titleist fitter clued me in on the tour issue options.  I likes the Project X shaft and although the tour issue shafts were not included in his fitting kit , he was able to choose a weight and stiffness that suits me very well (in my case 7B3 for my driver and 8B4 for the fairway metal).

They are documented on the Royal Precision site (owned by True Temper), and can be ordered from Titleist.

  6. Thanks Ryan - that is what I thought might be the case.   Doug
