Frozen Balls

Alas, the season here in Ontario is surely coming to an end.

Temperatures dropped well below the freezing point last night, and are not forecast to rise much above freezing throughout Sunday. Fortunately it appears that there will be a respite early next week giving us a chance to get out and sneak in a few more rounds as the season winds up.

Question for my fellow TT members...

When you are playing in the cold weather in the twilight of the season how do you keep your golf balls from getting too cool?

Personally, I like to keep two extra golf balls in my pocket tucked inside my layers of clothing and change every other hole so that I am not playing with a super hard ball. I have a fear of damaging my driver hitting something too solid against the cold metal face so keeping the ball warm gives me a sense of safety whether right or wrong. My experience from work is that metal does become more susceptible to damage when it gets really cold so I am trying to be nice to my D2.

I have had a driver crack on me many years ago, (not a Titleist product) and I don't want my D2 to suffer a similar fate :)

    Hi Darius,

I am so glad that we don't get that cold out here on the West Coast ... but it seems to me that keeping a bag of golf balls in an insulated type of bag with perhaps some heated gel pads would help. Im referring to the prepackaged, multiple use or reusable gel packs that can be either heated in the microwave (For heat purposes) or frozen for a cold pack.

Something like that should help keep the golf balls fairly warm and from getting too hard!

    All the best!

Dino - What a great idea...

My bag has an insulated drink pouch which would be perfect for some balls and one of those heated gel packs. I will have to give that a try !

    Thanks for the idea...

I'm glad that you found it to be worth trying. I should also have added that you may wish to line the beverage pocket with some aluminum foil ...it should help keep the heat insulated a bit better.

I do the same thing -- but in reverse to keep my cold beverages cold in the hotter summer months. Let me know how it works and let's hope that the heat can last 18 holes! :-)

Great thread everyone!  Some wonderful recommendations.

A couple of things to keep in mind that have already been mentioned but I'd like to highlight.
First, we recommend storing golf balls at normal room temperature.  If a golf ball is normal room temperature and then introduced to play in that state, then the cool conditions will take longer to have any noticeable impact on feel or performance...if any at all.  If a golf ball is put into play after being stored in your car or back shop at already cool temperatures, then conditions could obviously impact feel and performance quicker.

Second, each golfers definition of 'cool playing conditions' differs.  Of course, the cooler the temperature, the faster such conditions will have any noticeable impact on feel or performance...if any at all.

Our suggestions would be as follows:
-Store your golf balls at normal room temperature in between rounds.
-When playing, store your golf balls in the pocket closest to your body or (as suggested above) rotate an extra ball in your pant pocket into play.

It sounds like there are some other great recommendations above as well.

    Cheers,

Here it is, 10:30 on October 23rd and the frost is still heavy in a lot of areas. It is 39 degrees F outside so I am going to wait until closer to noon before I head out. I have 4 balls sitting inside keeping them warm (as per Mitch's suggestion, and will do my ball rotation throughout my round. This weekend I plan on picking up a couple of those hand warmer packs to put in the bag to try one of the other suggestions.

Thanks everyone for the great tips. I am looking forward to getting out. The snow will be here eventually, so I plan on taking advantage of each opportunity I can before the season ends :)

Well - I got to the course, and still had to wait another 45 minutes for a frost delay :(

I took my warm golf balls to the putting green along with some that were in the trunk of the car overnight. I must admit, the warmer balls felt much nicer coming off the putter face than the cold ones. (all ProV1's)

Unfortunately, even though the warm golf balls felt nice coming off the clubs, my swing was off for I was simply not used to wearing so many layers of clothing. It is absolutely amazing how much different it is to swing a club when wearing 4 layers of clothing as compared to a simple golf shirt :)

I am undeterred however. I shall keep my golf balls inside until it is time to go out and play, and will continue to switch warm golf balls every hole until the season comes to an end on November 1st.

After all - it is not all about the score - golf is all about overcoming the obstacles in our way. Whether it be rain, cold weather, trees, bunkers, or leaves covering the fairways forcing us to institute the "leaf rule". Just PLAY !!!

Well Darius, tough to hear that you have that much frost already in the area. Been pretty lucky in southwestern ontario so far. Haven't had to wait for any frost delays yet. However, the long range temps look like they are dropping rapidly. Hopefully I can get a few rounds in with my new wedge that i have yet to hit.  Going to give a Vokey K grind a go and see how it feels.

Happy golf to everyone for the rest of the season.

Great input here gang! Thanks Mitch for a "from the source" review. I usually just play with what I have and keep close to body. Never thought of it much but think maybe some of those hand warmers in my mitts with the ball kept inside might be the way to go. Maybe rotate 2 of them. Great thread, have me thinking. By the way...... What a great fall for golf in Ontario eh! Cheers Team, James G :)

It takes hours for a ball to change temperature significantly either way. Yes the exterior felt cold to us but the inner cores don't freeze. Store your ball inside and take them to the course and then enjoy your round.

Here's a good tip given to me a few years back - when playing in cooler temps between holing out and your turn to hit on the next tee keep the ball tucked up in your armpit - this will warm the ball up nicely and help with those cold weather tee balls.

It hasn't been that cold in the winters up here in the high desert, L.A. county, for the last few years, but we do get to about 30ish with wind. During those times, I've done what you have, which is rotating the balls in every couple of holes. But to start with, the balls are kept indoors, and also, I keep a couple in my back pocket to keep them warm.

    Hey Darius,

I usually carry my pro v's in my pocket as i play at this time of year. Usually 2 just in case. Also, I have the knit pom-pom covers for my driver and 3wood to keep them warm : )

Like other people have stated, I store my inside and keep them in my pocket as much as possible. Hopefully, after all of this rain we will get some more rounds in this weekend.
