Sky Caddie vs Bushnell Laser

    I currently have a Sky Caddie and find it has really helped my game. Recently I have played with several guys that have a laser rangefinder and find that they worked pretty well. I liked having the yardage exactly to the flag instead of guessing where the flag is on the green. Before pulling the trigger on a Bushnell I thought I'd get the opinions of others. So my question is, should I dump my Sky Caddie for a laser rangefinder?

    I currently use a Garmin unit and play with guys that use the Bushnell. The Garmin gives me the opportunity to move the flag on the screen to what I see as the approximate location to get my yardage.  During play we will often compare yardages and we will find that the difference is seldom out by more than 3 or 4 yds.  Where the Garmin comes in most handy is when you are playing to a hidden pin around a dog leg or where the pin is simply blocked out by brush or hills etc...  The Bushnell is useful when trying to get exact distance with a steady hand, and to get distances to the far edge of a bunker you need to carry etc...

    I love my Garmin, and would not replace it with a range finder. For me, I will give up the accuracy of the +/- 4 yds in order to get the ability to get the distance to a flag that one simply cannot see :)

    IMO, yes.  I had the Garmin G6 before purchasing the Bushnell Tour V3.   Both are quick in giving you the yardage however I would have to toggle (moving the dote) with the Garmin to see how far the bunker is etc and not sure if i'm correct or not.  With the Bushnell, I'm able to pull it out, aim and bam I get the yardage I need. It's been pretty accurate for me so far and i'm wondering why i didn't get this in the first place.    

    Also, another HUGE advantage is taking it to the driving range.   I love knowing how far the targets are when practicing.  Yes some ranges put out the yardages but i don't trust them.

    I have a Bushnell Rangefinder ... an excellent device imho. I personally prefer the rangefinder over the GPS systems for a host of reasons. However, given that you already have the Sky Caddie and I presume that it is still very recent and not that old, I would suggest that you keep on using it. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, and you save the $300 plus.

    Now, if you are set on replacing it with a rangefinder or if having the accurate distance to the pin, or certain hazards, etc. is of paramount concern, then by all means go for the Bushnell Rangefinder. I currently use the Tour Jolt 3v with slope edition and I just love it.

    Again, both systems have their advantages and disadvantages, so it all comes down to what you are looking for and desire and then consider in the context of owning a GPS system already.

    I hope I didn't make your decision making process more muddled! And, all the best whichever route you wish to go (keep your existing or new laser).

    Hi Paztor,

    The debate rages on...  Both have benefits, and both have drawbacks.  Being able to laser the flag stick to get exact yardages is the obvious benefit, but of course, you will still have to adjust for elevation, wind, and so on.  For someone who can accurately hit an approach shot within a yard or two every single time, then I think a laser is beneficial.  At my skill level, I'm lucky to hit it within a couple of yards of the desired distance, so the added accuracy of a laser is probably wasted on me.  Plus, I've gotten pretty good at guessing the pin location.  My guessing ability with my SGX is rarely more than 2 or 3 yards off what my buddies with a laser read on a par 3, often we have the exact same numbers.

    That being said, you can only laser what you can see.  You can't get a distance to bunker or a stream that is tucked over a blind tee shot, or around the corner of a dogleg... A SkyCaddie will give you that info.  I guess, ideally, you'd have both, but that makes a lot of equipment to lug around, and will probably delay the game.   For me, the scales tip in the favor if the SkyCaddie.  As the saying goes, your mileage may vary.

    I switched to a skycaddie watch last year, and in my opinion it is better than anything. You can toggle the green position, but usually I am interested in the yardage to front. I have tried Bushnell, but I found they were a lot of work.

    why not use both? I have the bushnell because I like to know the exact distance so it takes the guessing out and you can be more committed to the shot. I use the Iphone gps app so I can determine how much room I have around the pin.

    Have to agree with Mark H. Use both my friend! I have both and while I mostly use the Bushnell, I always bring the Sky caddie to tournaments and courses I haven't played. Another good feature with the sky caddie is the "mark" function so I can mark point A and B and see how far I'm hitting driver or other shots. Having a Laser you can certainly get a distance to anything you can see so why not have the best of both worlds. Cheers Team!

    Hello,
    I am a little late to comment, but love my Bushnell V3. I did have a small problem with the zipper on the carrying case breaking, but I called the warranty line and they shipped a new one out no questions asked, didn't even ask for proof of purchase or to return the broken one.
