SM4 Question

    I was chatting with a fellow Titleist Nut the other day and he raised a very good question about the new SM4 wedges I'd thought I would ask. In the 09 spin milled wedges the grooves on the 48-54 were not as aggressive as they were in the 56-64, so that players wouldn't spin the lower lofted wedges back too much. Will the new SM4's be the same? I'm thinking of making the switch but I don't want to be ripping my 50 and 54 back off greens when I'm swinging full bore at one. Hope that makes sense to everyone!     Brad/Matt,

    Unlike the SM2 wedges, the grooves on the SM4 wedges are cut the same across all models.  Due to the U.S.G.A limitations, the grooves are not as aggressive as the older SM2 models and result in less spin (still much more aggressive than the SM3 wedges and are 100% conforming).   The SM4 grooves are pushed to the limit on all loft/bounce configurations.

    So what you are saying is if you had a 56/60 in your bag from last year the Gold CC version and decided to put a new SM4 52 in the bag this year the SM4 would spin quite a bit more than the SM3 good ones. That's kind of dissapointing, guess people will have to update their entire wedge set up then.

    Due to the more aggressive grooves in the SM4, the SM4 will spin more than the SM3 CoC version.  This was one of the many goals Bob and his team wanted when creating this new line. 

    I wanted to share a quote from Bob himself regarding this issue, "The SM4 wedge will spin more than the SM3 but less than the original SM2.  We tried to regain spin (but stay within the limits of the U.S.G.A) which is what majority of the players (PGA Tour) wanted on all of their wedges.  Tests have proven, this is the most consistant groove in spin from all turf and sand conditions."

    Since the grooves are still less aggressive than the previous SM2 (Non-Conforming) grooves, the wedge team was able to create the wedges with the same grooves across all loft/bounce configurations.
